Anthropic’ s IPO and AI Risk

Anthropic has warned that artificial intelligence could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity”. Recently, it unveiled plans for a blockbuster US stock market listing expected to value the company above SpaceX’s roughly $1.8 trillion debut.

The Claude chatbot developer said it will list on Nasdaq under the symbol ANT. Though it has not disclosed the number of shares, price range or listing date. It would be the first fully AI-focused company to go public by making the offering a test case for investor confidence in the sector.

In its filing, Anthropic reported $16.3 billion in revenue for the first half of the year and losses of more than $80.7 billion. The company said it would often make forward investments that “may seem irresponsibly large at first glance,” adding that it aims to be “bold but sane.”

Anthropic warned that advanced AI systems could threaten humanity if misused, replicated or weaponized. It will be problematic if AI allowed to operate with high autonomy without safeguards, oversight and security. It also cited Anthropic facing risks from regulatory action, reliance on cloud providers including Taiwanese chipmakers. Further the company also pointed risks from the US data centers, and uncertainty over liability for harms linked to its models.

The filing comes after a wave of cybersecurity breaches involving AI agents and warnings from current and former staff at AI companies. On Monday, the owners of rights to Elvis Presley’s music sued Anthropic, accusing it of using hundreds of Presley songs to train Claude.

Anthropic, founded five years ago by CEO Dario Amodei, his sister Daniela Amodei and five others, announced its intention to go public in June. Rival OpenAI is expected to follow early next year.

Despite the warnings, Anthropic said AI could accelerate progress in medicine and economic growth. Analysts said the listing would be a significant milestone for AI.
