Building Data, AI, and Digital Governance for Development

We focus on the data, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and development nexus. We envision this platform as a point of convergence for research, policy, and practice. A fundamental focus of ours is on comprehending the role of cutting, edge technologies in facilitating governance, economic development and social well- being. Such understanding is especially crucial in the contexts of developing countries and the Global South.

Through our AI & Governance segment, we examine the role of governments in AI policymaking including the use of automated decision-making systems, as well as integration of AI into public administration. AI Ethics & Accountability explores critical issues such as fairness, transparency, accountability, and human rights. This arise when algorithmic systems influence public and private decision-making. Data & Development will highlight how investments in data infrastructure, digital inclusion, and the use of evidence-based policy can able to advance sustainable development goals.

Our Digital Trade segment delves into cross-border data flows, e-commerce regulation and digital trade agreements. We will analyze this through emerging geopolitical tensions circling the digital economy. At the same time, the Science–Policy Interface will connect research and governance. This will examine how scientific evidence, advisory mechanisms, as well as knowledge networks influence the policymaking processes at both national and international levels.

We also place growing emphasis on AI and International Relations (IR). This is conducted by analyzing how AI is able to transform diplomacy, security, geopolitical competition including information warfare and global governance. This includes examining AI’s role in shifting power balances, reshaping strategic decision-making, and creating new challenges for international norms and cooperation. This will be generated particularly from the perspective of the Global South.

Moreover, our AI and Banking & Finance work investigates how AI is changing financial systems via credit assessment, risk management, fraud detection, regulatory technology, and financial inclusion. We look at how AI can be both a blessing and a curse for developing countries, with issues of bias, explainability, data sovereignty, and regulation capacity being some of the concerns raised.

It is our collective vision to be a thoughtful, research, driven, and policy-relevant platform for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners by advocating the responsible, fair, and inclusive use of data and AI. This would be done through the combination of technical skills, policy understanding, and development insights.
